2018 VMA Snubs

If you seen the VMA awards this week, you will see why some might take it as a joke. Some of the winners from the event are just flat out RIDICULOUS. So what I’m going to do is list the award, the nominees, the winner, and then my personal opinion on who should’ve won the award. I will only be do the main award categories. Even if there wasn’t a snub I will still give my personal opinion.

Video of the Year:
Ariana Grande – “No Tears Left to Cry”
Bruno Mars – “Finesse (Remix)” [ft. Cardi B]
WINNER: Camila Cabello – “Havana” [ft. Young Thug]
The Carters – “APES**T”
Childish Gambino – “This Is America”
SNUBBED: Drake – “God’s Plan”

Honestly, the “Havana” video was amazing. It was directed to be a telenovela (spanish soap opera) which was pretty cool to watch. It also featured social media stars Lele Pons and LeJuan James (as la abuela). With over 600 million views, this video was very deserving of the award, but “God’s Plan” was just a pinch better. First off there was no real directing in the video. Drake pretty much walked around Miami and gave away the video budget in cash. He stopped in a grocery store, high school, and even linked up with Antonio Brown in a retail store. Seeing the reactions to Drake casually giving money away was priceless. With over 750 million views on YouTube, I think this video deserved the award.

Artist of the Year:
Ariana Grande
Bruno Mars
WINNER: Camila Cabello
Cardi B
SNUBBED: Post Malone

OK OK OK….. I get the video award maybe but Artist of the Year??? STOP PLAYING. No disrespect to Camila because she does make great music and shows so much promise. But look at the other nominees. She’s maybe 4th on that list. There is no reason for her to get that award. She had maybe 3/4 great songs but compared to the nominees, that ain’t much. Post Malone absolutely killed it this year with ‘Beerbongs & Bentlys’. The album broke the streaming record (before ‘Scorpion’ dropped) and almost every song made it to Billboard Hot100. “Rockstar” quickly became #1 and “Psycho” followed right after. Theres no question why he shouldn’t be Artist of the Year.

The only reason I didn’t say Drake was because his album just dropped and although he is probably the best artist year in and year out, most 2018 has been Posty’s year.  And if those two weren’t nominees, I’m still taking Cardi B over Camila. Cardi had a crazy good year with two #1 hits on Billboard and 19 songs (features too) in the Hot 100. It really confuses me as to how Camila won this one.

Song of the Year:
Bruno Mars – “Finesse (Remix)” [ft. Cardi B]
Camila Cabello – “Havana” [ft. Young Thug]
Drake – “God’s Plan”
Dua Lipa – “New Rules”
Ed Sheeran – “Perfect”
WINNER: Post Malone – “rockstar” [ft. 21 Savage]

AGREED! If not this than maybe “God’s Plan” or “Finesse” but “Rockstar” easily ran through everyones speakers for most of 2018.

Best New Artist:
Chloe x Halle
Hayley Kiyoko
Lil Pump
Lil Uzi Vert

AGREED! No argument here. The competition wasn’t even that close to be honest. I am just confused as to why Lil Uzi is considered a new artist. This man has been hot in the game for at least 2 years already. GET IT TOGETHER….

Best Collaboration:
Bebe Rexha ft. Florida Georgia Line – “Meant to Be”
SNUBBED: Bruno Mars – “Finesse (Remix)” [ft. Cardi B]
The Carters – “APES**T”
WINNER: Jennifer Lopez – “Dinero” [ft. DJ Khaled & Cardi B]
Logic – “1-800-273-8255” [ft. Alessia Cara & Khalid]
N.E.R.D – “Lemon” [ft. Rihanna]

“Dinero” was cool and all because J-Lo is unreal at everything and Cardi B is next up. (And they got the Bronx connection). But as far as collab songs go? NAHHH. This song didn’t even do great numbers. Less than 25 million Spotify streams and was on the lower 50 half of Billboard Hot 100. “Finesse” did over 300 million on Spotify and was like a top 5 song on Hot 100. And I get the “numbers don’t mean everything” argument, but the song is just better in general. No one is choosing to bump “Dinero” over “Finesse”. SMH, do better MTV.

Best Hip Hop Video:
Cardi B – “Bartier Cardi” [ft. 21 Savage]
SNUBBED: The Carters – “APES**T”
SNUBBED: Drake – “God’s Plan”
J. Cole – “ATM”
SNUBBED: Migos – “Walk It Talk It” [ft. Drake]
WINNER: Nicki Minaj – “Chun-Li”

STOP IT! See before I understood Camila winning the best video award but now this is some other s***. The “Chun-Li” video was so average. Sure the theme was cool and the song went hard but as far as I’m concerned, that is a typical Nicki Minaj video. Like The Carters shut down the Louvre. LIKE THE WHOLE THING. Just to shoot a video. That’s the largest art museum ever and its in Paris. That’s so iconic its crazy. I already broke down “God’s Plan” above. But even “Walk It Talk It” was better. They had a 80s theme game show with the coolest costumes. Even Jamie Foxx came through to film. That video was so dope. I’m not sure who should’ve won, but it should’ve been one of the three.

Video With a Message:
WINNER: Childish Gambino – “This Is America”
Dej Loaf and Leon Bridges – “Liberated”
Drake – “God’s Plan”
Janelle Monáe – “PYNK”
Jessie Reyez – “Gatekeeper”
Logic – “1-800-273-8255” [ft. Alessia Cara & Khalid]

This one was too easy. If they got this one wrong you would see me go crazy. I guess there can be an argument for Logic’s video but I think the song has a better message than the video does. “This Is America” was ART!

Best Visual Effects:
Ariana Grande – “No Tears Left to Cry”
Avicii ft. Rita Ora – “Lonely Together”
Eminem – “Walk On Water” [ft. Beyoncé]
WINNER: Kendrick Lamar & SZA – “All The Stars”
Maroon 5 – “Wait”
Taylor Swift – “Look What You Made Me Do”

THIS SH** WAS LIT! If you didn’t see this video yet please find it and watch it. This was probably one of the coolest videos that came out of hip-hop in recent years.

Song of Summer:
Calvin Harris & Dua Lipa – “One Kiss”
WINNER: Cardi B, Bad Bunny & J Balvin – “I Like It”
DJ Khaled ft. Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper & Quavo – “No Brainer”
Drake – “In My Feelings”
Ella Mai – “Boo’d Up”
Juice WRLD – “Lucid Dreams”
Maroon 5 ft. Cardi B – “Girls Like You”
Post Malone – “Better Now”

Can’t argue this one but would just like to say that “One Kiss” and “Boo’d Up” BIG sleepers for song of the summer. (Even though “In My Feelings” has all the hype)
